Dash Mounted Winch Control

4-28-08

Before I even used my Warn M8000 winch for the first time, I knew that I wanted to have inside dash mounted controls for it. The supplied cabled remote is great for the times you or someone else need to be outside the vehicle, but most of the time that is not the case. I ordered a winch control from 12voltguy.com which was a pleasure to deal with and was a nicely made quality product. I had already pre-wired the winch, and ran the cabling into the cab. now it was just a matter of figuring out what wires did what, and how to hook them all up. I basically used a DMM to determine the signals the cabled hand controller was sending, and then matched them up to the dash switch. 12voltguy.com was also nice enough to supply a wiring diagram that matched most winches, especially Warn winches.

The switch panel has a main guarded power switch, which activates the In/Out switch. This is a great safety feature so that you don't accidentally operate the winch. Simply lift the switch guard and flip on the main power switch. A red light on the power switch lets you know its turned on. You can then operate the In/Out switch.
I mounted the switch on the dash on the left of the steering column. This way I can easily operate it with my left hand as I am driving. This also puts it in reach if I want to stand right outside the Jeep and operate it.

I have only had the winch installed for a month or so, and have had to use it 3 times. it has already paid for itself. you only have to get stuck once to realize how useful a winch can be.
